Electronic Data Interchange

The transmission of strictly formatted data between trading partners by electronic means without human intervention. When a buyer sends an electronic purchase order to their supplier and the supplier fulfils the order and generates an invoice, which is paid by the client electronically, the process is enabled by electronic data interchange [EDI].
